What are the minimal things needed to tell a story?

Generally, the following elements are what are needed in order to have a story.

Character

A story usually has a central character – a protagonist – and invites you to identify with them. A character needs to want something – or to have motivation. Without this, not much is going to happen in the story.

Journey

A character needs to go on a journey. They start somewhere and end somewhere else. This is a series of connected events called the β€˜cause and effect’ chain.

Transformation

Every story is about change. What a protagonist changes into – or learns by the end of the story – links to the moral, or message, of the story.
