Verbinski introduces Jack Sparrow by staging a heroic entrance and then puncturing it, establishing the character's comedy and his self-belief at once.
OObservation
Sparrow is first shown in low angle against the sky with triumphant music as his ship enters the harbour, before the camera pulls wide to reveal a small boat sinking beneath him, which he steps off without comment.
CConnotation
Delivering the conventions of a hero shot and then contradicting them codes him as a man whose self-image exceeds his circumstances, and signals that the film will play with genre rather than obey it.

We are invited to laugh at him and admire him simultaneously, which is the relationship the whole franchise runs on.
