Chu makes the conventions of the musical visible by switching into them and back out again inside one scene, so the audience can feel the rules change.
OObservation
A spoken conversation in a dormitory slides into a full sung number. The camera abandons conversational coverage for sweeping moves and choreographed framing, and the room's furniture, mirrors and wardrobe become performance space.
CConnotation
The heightened form signals that we are inside Galinda's view of herself, where transformation is a performance she stages and Elphaba is the material she works on.
AAudience
We are invited to enjoy the number and to notice its self-absorption at the same time, which is what keeps the comedy from being simply cruel.
