Panic Room · 2002

Sound Design

A sealed room turns the soundtrack into the story — every scrape, breath and muffled voice through steel becomes information.

Watch for

  • How muffling tells you which side of the wall a sound is coming from.
  • The use of silence to make small noises enormous.
  • How the sound mix carries the threat while the image gives you very little.

A worked reading · COCA

CContention
Fincher makes sound the primary storytelling channel by physically separating his characters from what they need to see.
OObservation
Dialogue and footsteps beyond the panic room are filtered and dulled while interior breathing and small movements are held close and dry in the mix.
CConnotation
Filtering codes distance and barrier; close, dry interior sound codes vulnerability and confinement.
AAudience
We strain to listen exactly as the characters do, which converts our own attention into suspense.

Your turn

  1. How does the mix tell you where a sound is happening?
  2. What does silence do to the sounds that follow it?
  3. Which is doing more work in this scene — the picture or the track?
For teachers

The clearest example on the shelf of sound editing as narration. Excellent for the Audio page and for teaching the difference between sound effects and sound design.
